REVIEW: Spellfury – Episode III (because I forgot to do it last week >.<)
Written by Ithiel on Monday, April 13th.
Hi Everyone,
Well, I promised Travis that I would review all three episodes, but like a total n00b – I forgot. Mainly because I forget everything. Except my name – I wear a sticker to remind me of that one ^.^
Anyway – SpellFury Episode III. This episode gets straight into it – summing the first 2 episodes up in about 24 seconds (which is good, as the 1:50sec the ep goes for doesn’t leave much time for dilly dallying), we go straight into a fight scene between Blonde-Elf (armed with the afformentioned Sword of a Thousand Truths/Lightsaber thingy) and the ugly ghost with claws that just made mince meat out of my Dramatic Chipmunk Reference Man (haHA! got another one in there! *evil laugh*).
Now, everyone loves good CGI, and most people can put up with bad CGI, but what really cuts the fine line between what people are ok with, and what people just can’t stand is if the interaction between actors (non-cgi) and the CGI bits is bad, because it just makes everything feel awkward (anyone who has watched more than one episode of Merlin will know what I’m talking about – great show, but human/CGI interaction is $#*7).
Now, while certain parts of the battle did make me cringe a little, not from a ‘gore’ perspective (quite the opposite – the battle was freaking hilarious, especially the end… I won’t spoil it, but epic-cliche doesn’t even begin to cover it), but from the actor/cgi interaction. I think it could have been done a little better, but in saying that – it was better than some of the fights in a certain BBC funded TV Series I just mentioned, and they got a £45,000 partyto celebrate their launch to the stage. Being that the slice to the chest on ugly blog ghost boy/man thing looked intentionally … how it looked… I can only say that they pulled off the way that it looked rather… ok. I’m sorry, can’t sugar coat that one any more – the scar thing looked terrible. Sorry, but it did. I laughed at how bad it look, so… in a way – it did succeed in making the episode funnier (if that was the goal, then count it as a win. I would ^.^).
All that aside, the end of the fight is awesome. I seriously had no idea that ugly blog ghost boy/man things exploded like a short-circuiting Dalek from the early days of Doctor Who[side note: just watched the newest special 'planet of the dead' or something. good. really good. <3 The Doctor]. Either way, I’m glad it did – I am now both better enlightened and entertained.
Overall Rating: 7/10 - The scar hurt my eyes, but the ghostly detonation (aka. my next forum avatar) saved the day. lol
