Everyone enjoys having a good ‘lol’ at China – their lax copyright laws, unparalleled gold farming abilities, and their inate skill to generate a cheap knock-off of everything they can get their hands on. World of Warcraft, it seems, is not immune to.. well.. any of these things.
Last month, The9 got a nasty kick in the pants by Activision Blizzard, who announced that after 5 long years of loyal(?) service hosting the game for our gold farming brethren, the company can kindly go suck a lemon – or watch their share price drop 30% (either one).
Of course there are a pile of reasons for the contract change, like the fact that The9 is partially owned by EA (Warhammer, anyone?), and that the winners of the contract NetEase already already have the China contracts for Warcraft III and Starcraft II anyway…
This boring pile of corporate-politics aside, it brings us to the funny bit. Being rather pissed at this whole mess, The9 has taken the ‘made in china’ avenue by announcing a new MMORPG game called World of Fight [now 'World of Fighter']. (url: http://www.wofchina.com/). Originally a near direct clone of wowchina.com, it appears that the game has been ‘re-scoped’ as a kind of street fighter / Tekken / Ikkitousen rip.. thing, maybe with a little WoW and FFXI thrown in there to make sure no one feels left out of the hackjob. lol.
In all honestly, I think they’re just trying to figure out who’s game they can copy without getting sued as much >.<
What does Blizzard have to say about all this mess? Not much really…
They’re still too busy giggling over their new BlizHQ Warcraft statue >.<

Yes, it was The9 who were in the wrong here, not china as a whole. Sure, they got the short stick in regards to the contract – but hey.. it happens.
The fact is that there are 3 important things here you are overlooking:
1. The lol-points against China are all valid.
2. It’s funny.
3. At the time of writing, the adsense ad at the bottom of the page was showing an advert for ‘gdpchina’, who sell wow gold and power leveling… and my love of irony kinda ran with it.
I don’t have a problem with China (I have some issues with their Government and how it treats its people**, but no issue with the people themselves) – never the less, that doesn’t mean I won’t take every opertunity to make a joke about them. Because hey.. it’s still funny ^.^
Same (if not more so) with American’s. nothing against them, but it’s still like a national sport in Australia to take the piss out of the yanks; they don’t cry about it – they just tell us another lame kangaroo pun and we call it even and both laugh about it. >.<

WoW I guess some people in China (note I didn’t say ALL) have no sense of humor. Or are blissfully unaware of the gold farm jokes that are made in the general WoW community.

I wonder if there’s actually enough people playing “world of fight” to make it worth playing instead of real “wow.” maybe people would like it if it’s free (?) but otherwise why would people play the fake if everyone else is playing the real one?
